GROUP RUN LEADER BIO

Julio Aguirre, who just turned 63, who has been recognized by New York Road Runners as Runner of the Year nine times is one of SRS’s remarkable runners who has won countless races in his age group. Having started running later in his life, at the age of 49, he is a running phenomenon and a great example of how running can literally change your life. Here’s a brief Q & A with Julio:

SRS: What got you into running?
Julio: I was hanging out at Central Park back in the day when I used to smoke and drink there. One day, I was smoking and drinking with my friends as usual and saw one of the New York Road Runner Races. My friends challenged me to maybe run one day at the race. I joked that I will try it. So I signed up for a race. My first race was the Superbowl 5k. In three years, I became the top person in my age group.

SRS: What’s the funniest thing that happened to you while you were running?
Julio: People thinking I was crazy because I was wearing shorts and tank top while it was -10 degrees.

SRS: Who is your running hero (if any?)
Julio: Alberto Salazar. I beat him once in a 10k race, but he was retired from racing already. I also beat Bill Rodgers at the Boston Marathon this year.

SRS: What shoes are you running in now?
Julio: For racing, I wear Saucony Fastwitch. For general training, I wear any brand. But my favorite, if I have to pick is the Saucony Triumph.

SRS: If you could give one tip for runners, what would it be?
Julio: To train consistently. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices to get your training done. I would sometimes run after work till midnight to finish my run.

SRS: What is the best thing about running?
Julio: I get to travel all over the world. I have gone over 50 cities running different races.

SRS: What is the favorite food that you indulge in?
Julio: I don’t really eat junk food, but I eat two pieces of Wert after lunch everyday.
